DS, signed “John Steinbeck,” one onionskin page, 8.5 x 11, June 8, 1949. Agreement between the author and 20th Century-Fox Film Corporation. In part: “This will serve to confirm the agreement between you and this company that the said Option Agreement, dated July 12, 1948, has been and is hereby modified to the extent only that, in lieu and instead of the provisions in the second sentence…this company shall commence on the date of said Option Agreement and shall continue to and include January 31, 1950.” In very good condition, with creasing, wrinkling, tear and paper loss to the top of the page, and several small pin holes at the top border. Steinbeck’s agreement with the film studio brought the epic The Grapes of Wrath to the big screen nearly a decade earlier.
